November 5 & 6, 2011 Age of Indulgence
|
“The Age of Indulgence” recreates the opulent sound world of a 1750s Paris salon - including four works never before heard in Ohio.
These works revel in the decadence of the era while at the same time espousing Enlightenment values – individuality, originality, and experimentation. This is music whose harmonic and technical virtuosity pushes boundaries and yields expressive extremes. Ohio premieres include two quartets from François-André Philidor’s 1755 L’art de la modulation, selections from Antoine Dauvergne’s Concerts de simphonies (1751), and Jean-Joseph Cassanea de Mondonville’s Op. 3 no. 1 sonata (1749). Rameau’s beloved Pièces de Clavecin en concert no. 3 completes the program.
Pre-concert lectures will highlight the significance of these works within their composers’ social and cultural milieu.
Featuring: Scott Metcalfe & Julie Andrijkeski, baroque violin; Debra Nagy, baroque oboe; Emily Walhout, viola da gamba; Michael Sponseller, harpsichord.
Funded in part by a grant from the Maison Française de Cleveland Fund

January 28 & 29, 2012 Caractères de la danse
|
Simultaneously signaling power and grace, refinement and discipline, the art of dancing held a singular status at the court of Louis XIV. Music for dancing – whether for the ballroom or the theater stage – was likewise at the heart of French baroque style. Our program includes Rebel’s “Characters of the Dance” (a fantasia choreographed for a single virtuoso dancer), solo suites for oboe and viol by Hotteterre and Marais, and the earthy, rollicking dances of Boismortier’s Ballets de Village. Plus, the Muse of dance herself inspires a trio sonata by Rebel, La Terpsichore.
Featuring: Julie Andrijeski, baroque violin; Debra Nagy, baroque oboe; Josh Lee, viola da gamba; Michael Sponseller, harpsichord

May 12 & 13, 2012 Games & Diversions
|
Games & Diversions – ranging from innocent to licentious – occupy our attentions in this program inspired by gambling and gossip, and fueled by an obsession with chocolate, wine, and other exotic brews. Soprano Ellen Hargis joins Les Délices for excerpts from Charpentier’s Plaisirs de Versailles and Bernier’s delightful Coffee Cantata, while Marais depicts a game of badminton (Jeu de Volant), and Couperin teases out French foibles in his witty harpsichord suite, Folies Françoises.
Featuring: Ellen Hargis, soprano; Julie Andrijeski, baroque violin; Debra Nagy, baroque oboe; Emily Walhout, viola da gamba; Michael Sponseller, harpsichord.

Special Event: March 11, 2012 Myths & Allegories
Marvelous young soprano, Clara Rottsolk…should soon be a star in the early- music world. – Don Rosenberg (Plain Dealer)
Soprano Clara Rottsolk won the hearts of critics and audiences alike last May when she sang with Les Délices in Myths & Allegories. Back by popular demand, Les Délices reprises this program in anticipation of recording it for commercial release.
Weaving dramatic depictions of tales from Homer’s Odyssey together with instrumental chamber music inspired by Greek mythology, Myths & Allegories features cantatas by Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre (Le Sommeil d’Ulisse) and Thomas-Louis Bourgeois (Les Sirènes), plus selections from Jean-Féry Rebel’s 1703 opera, Ulysse. The hero Ulysses confronts storms at sea, shipwrecks, the tantalizing allure of siren songs, and encounters with the Cyclopes – all set to music – in the course of this colorful, fantastic program.
Featuring: Clara Rottsolk, soprano; Julie Andrijeski, baroque violin; Debra Nagy, baroque oboe; Emily Walhout, viola da gamba; Michael Sponseller, harpsichord.
Special Donor Reception to follow the concert.
All proceeds from this concert will support recording Myths & Allegories for commercial release.
